Objective

Updater is a software platform designed to make moving seamless for residents. Our goal was to enhance the existing web experience by developing a concept that would empower users to manage their entire move through an intuitive checklist interface.

What we've done

1. Created a whole new web app from zero

2. Conducted user interviews to analyze product market fit

3. Created a new design system that would be used throughout the whole company

Creative Process

1. User Research: I interviewed residents to uncover the most stressful and time-consuming parts of their move. Key insights included the need for task prioritization, reminders, and customizable task lists based on move type.

2. Design & Prototyping: Based on the research, I developed a checklist system that categorized tasks into key phases of the move: pre-move, move-in, and settling-in. Users could customize tasks, set deadlines, and get notifications.

3. We tested the prototype with a group of residents, observing their interactions to identify pain points. Using FullStory, we tracked where users were dropping off or getting stuck in the flow. This helped us pinpoint areas that needed refinement, such as streamlining task completion and improving the clarity of navigation.

4. Refinement: After the launch, we conducted follow-up sessions with users who had recently used the app to manage their move. Their insights were invaluable in understanding how the checklist performed in real-world scenarios, leading to further optimizations based on their feedback.

Results

The updated web experience received positive feedback from residents, with many users noting how the checklist reduced their moving stress. Post-launch, we saw a significant increase in user engagement, as well as improved task completion rates across key stages of the moving process.

Conclusion

The Updater project reinforced the importance of understanding users' needs at every step of the design process. By leveraging user feedback, data from FullStory, and post-launch insights, we were able to create a more intuitive and effective tool for residents managing their moves. The checklist feature not only improved user engagement but also helped users feel more in control of a traditionally stressful process.

Personally, this project was a valuable experience in designing for real-world needs and iterating based on actual user behavior. It highlighted the power of continuous feedback and collaboration across teams to deliver a solution that truly meets user expectations.
